Charity Event

April 29th, 2007

The charity event for the staff and children of the Cumaca RC School was indeed a huge success thanks to the members and associate members of TTORC.

We have done ourselves proud once again and the Principal, teachers, Parents and pupils of the school were very impressed and appreciated.

We received pledges to the sum of TTD2670.00 and we were able to fulfill all the requirements that we targeted which include, lunch, books and other stationery supplies and the water tank.

Here is what actually happened:

On Sunday 29th Apr 2007, ten TTORC members in their 4x4 vehicles assembled at KFC at the Kay Donna intersection (Roll met the group later at the school). We were due to leave at 9.30am headed for Cumaca RC school in the northeast of the island. The plan was to provide KFC meals for the students, parents and teachers of the school in addition to our donation of school books, school supplies and a water tank. The latter was carried on Randy's tray.

One KFC shift did not relay the order to the Sunday morning shift so the food was not ready until about 11am.

To make matters worse, the KFC cashier (young lady manning the middle cash register) was apparently not happy to be at work that day and made minimal effort to hide it. She said that she could not give us any change (coins) because she had none.

KFC meals finally in hand, We started our journey, 120 minutes later than planned because of the KFC mix up.

Just around 12.30 we arrived at the school to see all 18 students seated quietly around a large table waiting for the KFC lunch. The TTORC group quickly setup assembly line style "making" the KFC lunches faster than they were done that morning at KFC- a "2-piece with fries" for everybody.

Later we presented our donation to the Principal and toured the well kept school compound. Since the school is so remote there is no T&TEC electricity supply. They operate lights and small appliances using an inverter system. The batteries are charged using solar energy.

"All yuh cyah see a jeep eh?"- Keith Some members congregated at the Principal's little old Suzuki Jimny inspecting it. I suppose it was either for salvage parts or to offer him advice on how he could make it trail ready. Certain other members were quite pleased to know he also owns a Toyota Hilux.

After our stop at the school we left for the Cumaca river at around 3pm where some members took a dip in the cool, clear water. Watermelons (courtesy Raffick), saltfish and provision (supplied by Randy), and oranges (supplied by Carlvin) were all on the menu. Roll and Carlvin prepared a spicy orange chow on the spot.

Just around 4pm we started the drive home. We stopped along the way (at the big rock) to take some pictures and finish off the food.

All in all a satisfying day of TTORC activity.
