ENVIRONMENTAL MEETING
and the search for that elusive Olawasie Bird!

February 16th, 2007

Folks, here is an update on our committee meeting held last Friday in South.

Thanks to all in attendance despite problems with gas, diesel and battery. Thanks to Calvin (and wife via cell) for the great tasting pepper duck (if Roll was there we would still be soaking our mouth in the pond), Raff for cranking up the Land Rover bus, adding new oil (not recycled oil PQT) and making the tasty oil down. After our quick meeting the search for this night bird took us on a grade 2 trail made difficult by the vegetation and the fact that this was exploration. Even though we did not manage to get a glimpse of the ‘Olawasie’ (as I mentioned, it is a rare bird) another search would be planned next month.

Here are some photos and commentary from Paul………Sheldon

We met the gang at this junction, with our outstanding Committee Chief yearning to start the “official” meeting.

5 Mins after (and “Official” meeting completed) we were on our way along the rivers bank, in search of the “cow shed” where we were to set up camp for the night.

Camp established and pots a boiling, we were treated to many stories and laughs as well as fed the alligator in the adjoining pond.

Dinner (Carlvins very tasty “curry duck”, Raffs delicious “oildown & dasheen”) complete and well on its way through digestion, the search begun for this very elusive “Olawasie Bird”. Frankie was the first to catch a glimpse before settling comfortably in this ditch. (he claims it was the additional weight of Raff in de backseat dat caused him to sink)

The trail proved to be fun and challenging, and will definitely be a force to reckon with in the wet season. At the end of the trail, Sheldon found this great parking spot for the gang….some hunters passed along and enquired if we were ok and knew what time it was???

Here Raffick is seen embracing the Suzuki, we ended up giving him a few moments alone as it was late at night, and he seemed to miss his blankie!

Frankie striking a pose…

From there we ventured out onto the Historical Water Gate in Avocat….this is a great site!

Then after a great trail, it was decided to head back to camp and finish off the food. Sheldon’s rig refused to start, so he dispatched his co-pilot to rub its underside…..and presto….it started?!?!?!?.....go figure?

Back at camp after devouring the remaining food, we decided to end the trail as Carlvin and Roy had to get to the port for an early trip to Tobago.

Great trail fellas….looking forward to our next night trail.
