The Winch that Saved Christmas

The rain was quite heavy on one Christmas Eve,
Santa travelled by ground, behind schedule, if you believe.
He was cruising through Claxton Bay in his mighty red sleigh,
And said, “If I don't hurry, there will be no Christmas Day!”
Blitzen turned around and said, “Santa, you won't fail,
We Reindeer found a short-cut called Indian Trail.”
They headed for the trail, but when they got there,
The hills looked much steeper than they did from the air.
Up hill the reindeer struggled to make the sleigh go,
Getting up those muddy canefield hills made the progress quite slow.
They tried really hard but there just wasn't a way,
To get axle articulation and traction from an old wooden sleigh.
Where the hills were quite deadly, Santa ran out of luck,
Even with nine reindeer, he finally got stuck!
Indian Trail is no place for a sleigh full of toys,
Santa sighed, “I've failed all those good girls and boys!”
They pushed, they pulled, they prodded without luck,
But they could not budge the sleigh as it was terribly stuck.
The sleigh was sinking slowly into the unstable clay ground,
Yet a proper self-rescue tactic couldn’t be found.
Suddenly in the distance came a loud clanking sound,
Like an old wind-up toy that's been too tightly wound.
They saw it come around a switchback with a creep,
A rock crawlin', mud boggin' off-road jeep!
Its fenders were dented, and its sides were all scratched,
The soft top had big gaping holes that hadn't been patched.
But its tyres were big ones, looked like 33 inch,
And on its front bumper was a shiny new winch.
“If you're taking Indian Trail”, the jeep started to say,
“Go with your Club and invest in some mud tires for that sleigh.”
Santa said, “I'm sorry, I feel like an on-road jerk.”
The old jeep said nothing, it just went to winching work.
The old sleigh was unstuck and free in a cinch,
Thanks to that jeep and its shiny new 12,000 lb. winch.
Santa went on to fulfill Christmas Day,
With the old jeep proudly towing the over-laden sleigh.
Now many years have passed and the reindeer are old,
They don't fly very well when the weather gets cold.
But Santa's still out there every year without fail,
Fulfilling his promise in the air and on the trail.
On Christmas Eve night, look to the sky before you sleep,
You just might see him in that dented, beat up, old off-road jeep.
